Vic and Vivek Makh created history by becoming the first father and son team to not only compete in the Ultimate Pool Pairs Cup, but also win a group in the competition on Monday night.
The duo from Coventry went undefeated, topping Group 6 with five points to qualify for the last 16 of the event.
The evening in Newcastle-under-Lyme began with Andrew Herriot & Shane Rowley ousting Kyle Edwards & Phil Hoskins 3-2. Then there was a unique family affair as Makh & Makh drew 2-2 with Ultimate Pool professional Oly Bale and his nephew, Sonny.
The Makhs stayed out in the arena for the second session and this time collected maximum points with a 4-0 win over Edwards & Hoskins. The Bales then picked up their first victory with a grafting 3-2 success over Herriot & Rowley.
Going into the final round of matches, three teams could still qualify. Only Edwards & Hoskins were eliminated, but they showed character in their last fixture by coming back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with the Bales, disrupting their opponents’ plans for qualification.
The result meant that a trio of teams could still progress although Makh senior and Makh junior had more options open to them, with a win sending them straight through. And that’s what they did, again not dropping a frame as Herriot & Rowley conceded at 3-0 down with just seconds left on the match clock.
Makh & Makh are set to return for phase two of the tournament later in the year.
