Shaun Storry & Chris Day went undefeated but still had to go through a 6-reds shootout to book a place in the last 16 of the Eative Ultimate Pool Pairs Cup on Monday night.
It was Group 14 of the live televised competition which carries a £32,800 prize fund. There are only a few weeks remaining before the second phase of the competition and the East-Anglian duo made sure they are still in the mix.
Former world blackball champion Liam Dunster & Lewis McHoul travelled down from Scotland to compete and the dangerous duo made a statement straight away with a 4-0 win over Simon Baker & Rob Holt in the evening’s opening match.
Off the back of successful Ultimate Pool Series campaigns which saw Storry finish second in the professional rankings and Day seventh in the Challenger rankings – a position which promotes him to the top tier - the pair produced some party pieces in a 4-0 victory over Wales’ James Jones & Lee Loftus.
After Jones & Loftus defeated Baker & Holt 2-1 to keep their hopes of qualification alive, the two winning pairs from the first session played out an entertaining 2-2 draw and set up the possibility of a tiebreaker later on. And following 4-0 wins over Baker & Holt and Jones & Loftus respectively, Day & Storry and Dunster & McHoul would indeed need to be separated via the 6-reds.
The Scots went first, and despite a difficult start still managed to post a competitive target of 28.99 seconds. However, a scenario that they have practiced and appear comfortable with, Storry & Day were calm and measured in their response as they bettered it and progressed to phase two in a few weeks' time at the Players Pool & Snooker Lounge.
Dunster & McHoul are the first pair to be eliminated having collected five points during the group phase.
Next week sees Tom Cousins make his Ultimate Pool debut as he teams up with professional number one Shane Thompson in Group 15.
